Based on the interactions of the characters in the story, the statement "best friends are like family" is very true. The main character, Jacob's grandfather dies, and to satisfy his own curiosity and his grandfathers last wish, Jacob goes to a small Welsh island to discover things about his grandpas childhood.

On the island, Jacob discovers the children his grandfather had showed him in pictures when he was younger, which were still alive as children in a magical space that repeats the same day over and over infinitely. All of the children in the home have come together to become friends and to form their own family, despite being shunned by the rest of the world for their peculiarities.
