Suuuuuper interesting takeaways from part one, including the idea that we as teachers (inadvertently) teach students not to read compassionately and to read without ever thinking of their own feelings, how the reading affects them, and how they could connect to the reading. Grades 4-6 seem to be the turning point here, when standardized testing becomes more and more important. I wonder how we can add compassion back?
