Sanctuary: I'm very interested to know what Wharton's personal take on these moral questions are, cuz although it's the main driving force for the protagonist (and therefore the novella), there's a quite obvious undertone of a weird perverseness in Kate's actions and intentions and the overall conclusion of the story. classic Edith Wharton tho, turning a nothing situation into the end of the fucking world

oh my god. depression. the first Edith Wharton story I've read that's NOT NYC Elite society, and it's while it's my least fav of this collection, it was still good, obv. slower, less dramatic, more drab and depressing, and just overall pain and suffering: the standard for Ms Wharton, but without the spice of New York High society.

Madame de Treymes: another certified Good One™ by Edith Wharton, but different from any other stories from her. not a mystery, but kind of a "slow reveal of an enigmatic person and situation" that takes you on a fun yet devastating ride. classic Edith Wharton.

The Touchstone: Edith Wharton's first published story(?) bangs. homegirl could write an infinite amount of stories about early 1900s New York high society drama and I'd read and enjoy every single one. I think just from comparing this older work to her newer ones (only Age Of Innocence rn), she used to be even more Olde and Dense in her prose, which makes it hard to read quickly, but it's always amazing regardless
