Bushnell makes a pretty egregious mischaracterization of queen Kapiolani. There doesn’t seem to be any sense in the queen’s dislike of Caleb on the basis of his being hapa haole. Queen Kapiolani was the governess of Prince Albert, son of then Queen Emma who was herself hapa haole who she wrote lovingly too. If her dislike of him was simply his sassy tongue it should’ve been left at that.

Malie is the niece of "Peter Kahekili" who was the only aliʻi sent to Kalaupapa. But in history he was actually Peter Kaeo, a Kamehameha. Bushnell makes him out to have died by his leprosy but actually Queen Emma helped smuggle him back to Oʻahu so that he could go back to his legislative duties. Takes me out of the story a bit to see Peter Kaeo modified like this, to what end does it advance the motivation of Malie?
