I just learned the author, John Bellaird, was not nay a Catholic but that he had hoped to be a priest.

The hymn “Once to Every Nation” would confuse most young readers unless like me they tracked it down on YouTube, The hymn is by ames Russell Lowell

1 Once to every man and nation
comes the moment to decide,
in the strife of truth with falsehood,
for the good or evil side;
Some great cause, some great decision,
off'ring each the bloom or blight,
and the choice goes by forever
'twixt that darkness and that light

A mad wizard who wants to bring about the end of the world. Why would one want this? The return of God and the raiding of the dead.

Enjoyed the film but I am now following plot lines completely different. I just finished the car chase with a big black supernatural Sedan. The movie changed Salina’s fate. Also the friendship between Luis and his school chum was real but fragile. This makes its breakup more painful but also more true.

I loved the film and so I now turn the text. Some interesting differences already. It’s set at the end of the forties so World War II is closer in memory—Including the fact that his suitcase is from his dad and is a leftover from his time in the service The other is that he is a former alter boy and his Catholic faith is important. His imagines his uncle as a drinker snd a gambler.
