really unfortunate that hobb can’t seem to write a single female character with an arc that doesn’t include rape, and pretty graphic scenes at that. absolutely unnecessary and unimaginative, especially as a woman?? i was really loving this trilogy so i’m deeply disappointed at the turn this book took.

I do think the trilogy is worth reading, in that the depictions are no different than a lot of 90s era male dominated epic fantasies, but it is really disappointing from a female author. but definitely take it with a trigger warning. i had an issue with farseer too, but that was not nearly as bad.
I think in some ways Hobb was well intentioned but it misses the mark hard, and in the name of grimdark realistic depictions of women’s experiences it turns into a hopeless affirmation that women are never able to live their own lives and are inevitably always controlled by men.
