I understand this is fiction but why do some authors write the most exaggerated and implausible storylines.

Why didn't the Carver brothers pay for a plane ticket? Or a car rental? Why aren't they pre-booking motels/hotels? Why does the ex have to be a petty, incompetent, imbecile? I'm so done with these overly exaggerated storylines.
