The strike is gaining ground, but the establishment is fighting back. The perceived strike leaders are seeing privileges revoked. Hinton tries to coax Sara back to work with the promise of her beloved notebook, but she resists. Sara feels more alive resisting than she has been all year trying to follow the rules. Part 5 ends with Sara and Toya being led away by Hinton and the deputies. Fate TBD.

Sara has a bout of the norovirus. She recovers to a flurry of messages from "Eisley", who signed once and Julie by mistake. Sara sees the CRO when he makes a visit. He doesn't see retainees as human beings. After a computer search, Sara realizes who Julie is, and what she might be after. Emily had a crush on Victoria. Victoria gets blamed for the broken cameras. No proof, but she did do it. Who snitched?

There is a norovirus outbreak at Madison. Sara's strike is very slowly gaining converts. The staff is preoccupied they won't meet commitments. Sara is blackmailing Hinton to get her journal back.

Sara wants to start a strike and stop cooperating with her jailers. Her lawyer sends a message to keep a low profile, but she's out of patience. Hinton is MIA. The head administrator is dead set on keeping his numbers up. Someone has sabotaged the cameras and they are looking for a culprit.

Wildfires threats. Sara tries to break out in the confusion, but ends up part of an evacuation to Victorville. Sara gets her journal confiscated. She's having nightmares. Retention conditions are much worse there. After a week, they are sent back to Madison.

Part 3 has a big twist: Eisley is really Junie and she was a plant from Dreamweaver. She's leading a project to implant images in dreams as subliminal ads. Her company has reviews like the Sergey and Larry reviews back at Google. Lalami's description of SWEs is ridiculous. The chapter closes on her seemingly having a stroke.

Sara is becoming more and more institutionalized. She feels guilty for her brother's drowning. She missed her mom who died of lung cancer. Her friend or cousin Zachary tells her to keep to herself while in retention. Some of the other girls are being released, but the facility is expanding. Eisley is being released after only 21 days. Sara is jealous.

Sara dreams of failing her case review. She's argues with others that the system only looks for incriminating evidence and ignores anything that could be exculpatory. Elias is blaming her for all the extensions. Her medical file mentions one casual female sexual partner while in retention. Her request for some Xanax got denied.

Sara is slowly losing her grip on reality outside her facility. She's starting to suspect Elias is having an affair and is moving on. There are people living off the grid and are outside the surveillance umbrella.
