[Literature] must be integrated into the movement of human transcendence; instead, woman devalues books and works of art by swallowing them into her immanence; a painting becomes a knickknack,... a novel a reverie as useless as crocheted antimacassars. It is American women who are responsible for the degradation of best sellers: these books are only intended to please, and worse to please idle women who need escape

i think this is one of the books i can admire for historical significance etc but when you want relevant feminist text you'd go for something more modern, at least my main takeaway was smth like this (idk why i see your reply 6 days later)

I'm nearing the end, and after historical section it gets really psychoanalytical (i was really surprised, but it makes sense considering when it was written) in its methods and conclusions, and since this field is out of style these days, i can see why it may appear dated. But for me it's always interesting to see which psychoanalytical postulates will be accepted, rejected or reinterpreted. As per usual with psychoanalysis , there is a lot of projection going on....... At least that's how i see it.
Tbh, overall i find her perspective on womanhood claustrophobic and depressing, and not helpful at all, but i have to remind myself that it was really the different time....
