This sounds like exactly what she wants, what she has secretly always wanted. To read books when she wanted to read books. To be sad when she was sad. To be scared when she was scared. To be angry when she was angry. To be boring when she felt boring.

Phoebe is starting to wonder if this is why she is here, to fill the silences
between the wedding people that they don’t know how to fill, to ask the
questions nobody can bring themselves to ask.

And yes, sometimes she read too much. Sometimes, she read books instead of living a life, but didn’t that just mean that her life was about reading books?

Phoebe’s father mostly pretended her period didn’t exist, and so Phoebe pretended it didn’t exist.

Phoebe had been raised to feel sorry for everything—sorry for being born, sorry for almost drowning, sorry for getting an A-minus on my exam, sorry for not bearing children, sorry for not getting to the last three slides of the PowerPoint, everybody.

Look at what this painter has done with all this white space. He has chosen not to paint it! He has defied the conventions of painting by not actually painting! Isn’t that bold?
