Le Guin said that SF is the literature of metaphor made literal, which I think is what makes it so good at conveying the alienating experience of mental illness. Some of the most effective depictions of PTSD I’ve read are genre novels - Slaughterhouse-Five, The Forever War, Wizard of the Pigeons - and Pinsker’s “Remembery Day” continues that tradition in just a few devastating pages.

Maybe it’s just been awhile since I’ve read an SF short story collection that really jibed with me, but these stories feel revelatory in a way I wasn’t expecting. A reminder of what I love so much about this genre, in this format.
Standouts so far: “Remembery Day,” “Talking With Dead People,” “In Joy, Knowing the Abyss Behind,” “Wind Will Rove.”
