The story is good. Reminds me a lot of The Kite Runner, but it's extremely disappointing that I feel this book along with many others do not give the best representation of Islam and feed into the stereotypes that Islamophobes love. Thats all I keep thinking about reading this.

Agreed, but unfortunately many of those stereotypes are a reality in Iran

Yea, I sounds pretty secular. Some of it is more superstation. The author makes it clear that the characters are not practicing/ or don't have strong belief but talk about evil eye a lot more than regular practices. It's unfortunate for non-Muslim readers if they think it's the norm.
