Although Eckert uses some language that isn't acceptable now, e.g. words for native women and people of color, he does so in the context of reporting what people actually wrote at the time. I am pleasantly surprised by his refusal to adhere to the "settlers good/natives bad" whitewashing so common in histories written in his time.

My second attempt at this brick of a book. It's not that it's badly written or uninteresting; it's that the information is so densely packed it becomes exhausting. Despite the narrative style, this is not fiction. Eckert relied on a vast number of documents to create an accurate picture of the events along the Ohio River in the late 1700s. Even dialogue is extrapolated from actual reports.

If anyone is still operating under the illusion that people in the past were more moral or somehow "better" than they are now, this book will clear that right up for you. There are no good guys here, only monsters of varying degree. My father's ancestors are in this book and, while I do not like them, they are among the lesser monsters, so I guess that's something. I need a thousand showers.
