Above average (so far) for a second-rate mystery. Still, the odd false note in the dialogue and (less forgivably) in the narration grates: “They had lost business and annoyed several people in the early days, when the phone had sometimes gone unanswered” (p.100) Had answerphones not reached Somerset in 1998? [I was there and I am pretty sure they had!]
