Oh, f**f! Who put some "cry salt" in my red wine? Dan is still my hero. The meeting with his brother Duncan just confirms that.

This is when he and Vadim go to Scotland?

Boycop Yes, and runs away, and then returns.

Heart wrenching, but in a good way. I loved that scene! I love how Dan faces up to stuff and is who he is.

Aiko Ahh BC, I have no idea how you're managing to pace out the reading of these books. Housefires and wild horses couldn't have stopped me. But I'm sure it's way more healthy to take it in in bits and pieces.

Emma I genuinely liked Duncan. I could see some dan in him. But the entire family swallowed everything narrated to them with too much ease for my opinion. Maybe they just swallowed it and decided to digest it later.

Boycop Yes Kate, this is by far the best part of Mercs. True and believeable. And Dan rises to the occasion without comprising his character.

Aiko, I knew I needed time to read these, so I won't even try to read them in haste or during some short breaks. At times, it is really hard, like now, but I want to feel and enjoy these to the fullest.

Aiko you clearly have more self-control than I do ;) I turn into a zombie that forgets about the world when a book captures me. Contrary to some of the books that I've lost myself in though, when I was done with SF it was with a sigh of relief. Not out of sadness that there were no more words. It's really intense, and I'm sure it makes for a better reading experience when you manage to pace yourself.

I have had the opportunity to meet both hardship and on the other side some unexpected ease when confronted with gay issues (even in very conservative surroundings), and in my opinion you cannot be really be sure what to expect until it happens, so for me this was just one possible way.

I have been most lucky in my life in this sense, but my boyfriend Kim had some real tough times. Our families and our backgrounds are not that far apart otherwise, so you never know how people will react.

I'm glad you have a supportive family and I'm sure you share them with Kim so he has an extra one. Sometimes the family you choose can be even better than the one you get born with. :D

Boycop Yes, Kim has found a new "mother".

Emma Exactly.
You are never sure how people will react, family or not. Dan was lucky to face the better side of this issue.
I guess since I kept on heading into one dilemma after another in merc I, the ease of this affair was kind of unexpected for me.

Yes, in that way it was perhaps unexpected, but it felt really good.

Aiko In-laws...*Shudder*

It's okay. You have several hundred pages of lightweight sex filled romp coming up with Jean's wedding, a road trip with a guy they meet at the wedding and Vadim getting together with Hooch in Berlin. Then the story gets dark and interesting again. Meanwhile, enjoy the breather. :)

Boycop Aiko wrote: "In-laws...*Shudder*"

They are not all bad, maybe.

I have too many. I'll share them with anyone who's missing a few. They're nice people, I'd just like to see them a lot less often.

I am. :-D

No definitely not. My father in law is awesome. His only flaw is marrying step-monster-in-law :P And her only real flaw is that she's an airhead that's trying too hard to be a replacement mum I don't need.

Sorry, Emma. I'm incorrigible. :(

We'll see what Boycop thinks of all this.

Aiko Sometimes I think I should reread these books, but then I remember what it did to me. Some things are best just experienced once.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

We've toughened you up though, Aiko. You could handle reading these again.

message 23: by Aiko (new) - rated it 3 stars

Aiko yesh so you have ^^ Still not forced Indulgence on me though! ;D

But I think it's more of...*Struggle for words* You know when you have a memory of something. Like how frightening the horror-house was when you was 8, or how insanely good a movie was when you were a kid. Or how extremely good a that glass of water tasted when you had been out painting the house in the sun all day? You know that if you go through the horror-house now it will seem kind of ridiculous, the movie will be ruined by horrible special effects you didn't notice as a kid, and a glass of water is good, but not the lifesaver it was that one time?
I think I kind of want to keep my memory of SF as it is :)

Haha. No, I think you are more rational and more forbearing than me.

Re-read is not a bad idea aiko. After losing a certain case in a certain someplace I am itching to put myself through the predicament of SF.

I can’t wait to read BC’s views on Merc ii.

LenaLena Wise choice, Aiko. SF did not hold up on the reread for me, so I quit in order to not taint the memory.

I won't disagree there. Especially Soldiers. But I liked Mercs II better this time through.
