it's a mark of how good a writer simmons is that every time he does a fake-out I actually think "oh good, the crew of the doomed and lost franklin expedition are finally saved!" and then i get upset all over again when it's not true

if i had a nickel for every time dan simmons described a woman's bush i'd have five nickels. which isn't much, but it's more than you'd expect from a book about an all-male expedition to the arctic.
