the holt’s upstairs-downstairs myth is so ridiculous that i can only see it being believed for the sake of their marriage. i’m reading the 1989 release, so i wonder if more recent cases are discussed in that version. so disappointing that i can see the echoes of family myths and inequalities with the second shift still happening today. i’m sure much has changed since then, but it doesn’t feel much like it :(
