I just found a newish book recommendation site. This is their message: "Amazon's book results are mostly ads, and Goodreads does nothing for authors. There are almost no places where authors can market their books to readers without paying". All the links on the site are to Amazon.Membership $50 or $100 for authors annually, $25-$250 for readers. So it's an Amazon affilliate shop front and authors have to pay!

I agree with your sentiment "I don't see why authors shouldn't have to pay for marketing...", Petra!

Promoting one's book requires a marketing strategy that might include ads."thank you. it makes so much more sense now. amazon offers the ads, but it won't offer a ready made strategy.
I don’t know that I’ve ever read or purchased a book I’ve seen advertised here. My eyeballs skip right over.
When Amazon AWS had their massive cloud failure recently, I noticed that Fantastic Fiction was also offline - seems like FF is just another Amazon-owned site?Smiles to you, my friend😄!

By that measure your government is also an Amazon-owned business.
