Even with an extra-wide umbrella my legs and feet got soaked on my dash to the car. Most Februaries, though, this would be snow a foot or two deep, so I tried not to complain too bitterly. ALWAYS PLENTY OF TALK ABOUT THE CHICAGO WEATHER IN THESE BOOKS.

I sipped the cognac. It was staggeringly smooth. Please let him call me for frequent consultations, I begged the golden liquid. “I can be reckless when I have to, Mr. Humboldt.” SIPPING THIS KIND OF DRINK IS A COMMON EVENT FOR VI IN THESE BOOKS!

This early book in the series takes VI back to the area of Chicago where she grew up. The author gives an interesting view of how this working class area had changed in the previous 25 years. Once again, the primary Case she is working on is on behalf of a relative. The cases that dominate her early books so far have nothing to do with her usual work but have a personal connection. Getting to know you!

This fifth book in the series begins with a reunion of the high school basketball team that VI was on that won the state championship and she was the MVP. I had forgotten the basketball part of her life. She had gotten a basketball scholarship to attend the university of Chicago.
