Ok so Tolkien actually describes this story in a letter we read to his publisher but the synopsis doesn't convey just how long the in-universe time is -- and I'm not even halfway through 🤯

The toughest chapter I ever read in any book. Not impossible or unreadable. Every paragraph references map locations that aren't even given in maps, names and relationships of family members that are mentioned once and never again or randomly, oddly phrased logic and clauses, and then the KJV style of speech. Then you situate each paragrapg into the entirety of what you know about the time and space and history.
