you know Spud is sometimes portrayed as sort of like Irvine Welsh's self-insert. which signals to me that Welsh is egotistical (Spud is the only tolerable and genuinely kind-hearted person in any of these books) but also somehow extremely self-loathing (nothing good EVER happens to Spud and nothing ever changes because he's a victim of his own complacency)

every time I think Irvine Welsh can't possibly come up with something even more messed up to write about, he somehow does. I am horrified. I am clutching my pearls so hard every blood vessel in my hand has spontaneously combusted
