genuinely didn't see the direction the plot takes coming. i'm not 100% sure i've never seen it before but i do like the idea of the classic story of surviving while travelling a zombie-infested landscape when one of your party is to some extent or another one of the zombies. what could possibly go wrong?

Caldwell keeps insisting these are hungries (zombies) emulating the children they've infected (presumably to lure in prey) but if we're conceding they effect the kids differently, why can't we imagine them as the kid's true self being in there and fighting the infection more than adults do? Melanie seems to be able to choose to attack the junker who's otherwise protected. 'cause then her tests wouldn't be justified?

i already LOVE the idea of viewing a post-apocalyptic landscape from the eyes of a sheltered child. they're smarter than we give them credit for (look at the maths Melanie does with populations when only asked to remember them by rote) and extremely observant of detail but they don't always put two and two together (when Ronnie disappears, we assume she's been killed, a possibility Melanie doesn't even consider)
