100%, I never understood why it was made to be some sort of a faux pas on Astrid's part

I think the author was commenting on how lesbians get gaslit all the time into their our concerns don’t matter
I think it was sadly just meant to show how Astrid is a bad person at that point in her life (I finished the book)
Yeah, Astrid has a lot of problems, but her thoughts are her thoughts and wouldn't change. I'd argue she isn't a bad person, but she has substance abuse problems and have views that put her at odds with the broader queer community, which I think has a bad habit of bullying people who do not think the same. The Patricia Highsmith just makes her say what is ever on her mind. So the commentary is still valid imo
