The author adds the element of surprise in the story by completely throwing the characters, as well as the reader, into the unknown. Numerous times throughout the story, the main character is faced with situations that he has no idea how to overcome, or even what the situation he's facing is. The story begins with almost nothing making sense, but little by little information appears.

A good example of this is the first chapter, the main character goes to a bar with some friends and as he is leaving he is kidnapped, drugged, and knocked out. When he wakes up, he is in a scientific facility he doesn't recognize, surrounded by people he's never met but seem to know him, who start asking him questions about what he saw in the "experiment". To which both the main character and the reader are clueless.
