@nancy @cherie -- you don't necessarily need to do it of course, so don't worry. y'all are good. however, in my experience, it really helps to learn more about the background of the work and the author so that you can place the text according to its period and perceive it much more critically and appropriately. plus, learning about the themes, society of that time and the writers' intentions would allow you to not only get their interpretations but also compare yours against theirs. so yeah...it's a bit of a work but it does provide a lot of insight. 💗💌
