I didn't see that final twist coming (although ironically it's a twist for the characters but not the reader, as we know the truth but Simon has no means of guessing it...)

Apparently Pasevalles is a sociopath.
I did wonder about his motives at the end of the last book - but it isn't consistent with what we saw of him as a child, and after we spent so much time in his head with no prior suggestion of anything wrong, it feels like a cheat :-(
