From what I've read, "The River of Lost Souls" follows a real life event from 2015, nicknamed The Gold Mine Disaster. It's written by a bystander who has lived in Durango, Colorado all his life, and experienced the disaster first-hand. The disaster itself is the pollution of nearby waters, following a thick yellow sludge that came crashing down a mountain from a long-abadoned mine. I'm enjoying the book so far!

Currently, I'm learning about the history of the Gold King Mine, and how its owner's greed was their downfall in the end. The mine was successful, and lasted for many years, but the owner was determined to make more and more money, never truly pleased. It's said he would send "disasters" the mines' way, for example, a fire, and harm and kill his miners in the process. All for insurance money. Didn't work out, luckily

Right now, the author is diving into the history of Silverton and the surrounding areas. I've learned about the various amounts of destruction cursing the Utes mountains over the years, and the natives who lived there; and had to deal with fires, mudslides, and worst of all, "nomadic Christian farmers" who moved in on their home. As I expected, various amounts of misunderstandings and fights broke out.
