The writing is just ... terrible.
"That was part of the selling point that was so blatantly being used that day." (PASSIVE!)
"He had met the daughter in question only once in passing and she and made such an impression on him that he had not been able to forget her." (PASSIVE!)
(Not using her name is distancing the FMC from the author, audience, and MMC, easier to objectify that way.)
