It's weird how Maggie is somehow more human than in the original because her motives are grey. She's not an idiot as she's usually portrayed, but she's also not clever enough to wonder what motives John would have to come around. Then again, by her own admission, she's in love with him against her best judgement.

The set up does remind me of the original "Much Ado About Nothing", but this Benedick is much quieter than the original. I know other characters in the story call him a silver tongue, but I don't really see any evidence of that in the actual dialogue. Just the antagonism with Beatrice, which is pretty in character for him.
