Much better second story - has the likeable characters and you-may-die-here-for-ordinary-things danger that made the first two books of The Scholomance trilogy so fun. Why did they put such an awful story first in the collection?

I really liked Naomi Novik's two books that I first read - Spinning Silver and Uprooted. Strange, beautiful and satisfying. The last book of The Scholomance was different, and I was hoping this collection would be more like those two books than the last. The first story squashed that hope, and shows that she wanted to write like this from early on. So disappointed - going to try a couple more, just in case.
