I have a now grown-up daughter who was adopted from China when she was 3 1/2 years old. She has no memory of that that time in China. As I read in this book about recovered memories I wonder if she will one day try to retrieve information about her early years!

This book has a lot of background information about one of the regular main subsidiary characters, Lotty, the doctor and close friend of VI.

I kept the news of Radbuka’s stalking the Loewenthals, and Lotty’s disturbing behavior, to myself—Morrell didn’t need worries about me to take with him into the Taliban’s world.

I looked at the screen for a bit, as if it might magically reveal some other information, but eventually I remembered that no one was paying me to find out anything about Sofie Radbuka and settled down to some of the on-line searches that make up the better part of my business these days.

In that brief window of distraction, I launched myself at Rossy. I whirled, kicking him hard in the stomach, turning again as he lashed out at me to kick him on the kneecap. He was punching at me, but he wasn’t a street fighter. I was. I ducked underneath his flailing arms and butted him square in the solar plexus. He gagged and backed away.

People dropping everywhere! Bodies, bodies, and more bodies. Amazing how this book that started off with so much routine investigation turned to multiple murders about halfway through.

Morrell had only been gone two days, and I was already talking to stuffed animals. Not a good sign. Back at Racine Avenue I ran up the stairs in my stocking feet, Ninshubur clutched tightly in one hand.

“You can’t keep looking,” he mumbled. “I can’t afford to pay you.” “Don’t worry about that part. The investigation is getting big enough that someone else will pay the bill.” He didn’t need to know the someone would be me. AN ALTRUISTIC INVESTIGATOR?

It was close to midnight when I finally found a parking space on one of the side streets near my home. I lived three miles west of the Rossys. When I moved into my little co-op, the neighborhood was a peaceful, mostly blue-collar place, but it’s become so crowded now with trendy restaurants and boutiques that even this late at night the traffic made the drive tedious.

“I searched both the office and his home and couldn’t find a trace of your uncle’s file,” I said. “The police are labeling this a suicide, but I think someone killed him, and I’m sort of thinking they killed him to get that file.” HEAR WE ARE NOT HALFWAY INTO THE BOOK AND WE FINALLY HAVE A POSSIBLE MURDER!

They’re a funny bunch of guys, the Streeter Brothers: they do surveillance, bodyguarding, and furniture moving, with Tom and Tim Streeter running a changing group of nine, including, these days, two well-muscled women. REPEAT CHARACTERS. ARE A HALLMARK OF SERIES
