This book has small text and 360 pages, it is A LOT to take in with names, dates, document titles, and back and forth female comparisons. This is a DAMN GOOD BOOK.
Abigail Adams - wife of John Adams - has all of my respect in the way she wrote to her husband, speaking to him the way she did. That woman wanted an education for women BADLY. Abigail Bailey on the other hand... God doesn't fix anything.

The fact a man could declare his wife insane and send her to an asylum w/o trial is diabolical. The control men had over paternal custody was disgusting. Literally could not switch from a floor length dress in the late 1800s to a knee length one w/o the press calling women "hermaphradites" and saying they're husband-less. I haaaate men lmao why are they so cruel to us for real this is angering but important history

This section about women's freedom to speak was beautiful the way it talked about Angelina Grimke & Harriet Jacob's. Angelina travelled from South to North telling people that women had just the same rights as men & made a huge push for abolitionists. Harriet went through an immense amount of pain as an enslaved black woman & was able to give us background on enslaved sexual abuse & countless children unaccounted for

Abigail Bailey only made me really angry for the most part because her husband was a rapist, liar, abuser, and absolutely morally low. I hate Asa Bailey. She gave him numerous chances and even let him play into her ignorance by literally kidnapping her and selling off their 15-16 kids because she kicked him out for suspicions of incest and then GAVE. HIM. ANOTHER. CHANCE. I will commend her on her strength to run away to find her brothers to help free the kids and threaten to "sue" but I was heavily disappointed in how much she used "the Lord" to help her figure out her life.
