We didn’t make it far today … but we had to get medicine, adult, call our mom, and the font in this one is so small! Regardless, I love the narrative voice in this book! Steven is hilarious and I find him completely endearing. This story feels like something from the early 2000s like Degrassi or One Tree Hill … I don’t know. I never watched Veronica Mars, but the author wrote that early 2000s show.

I am well and finished this book. I liked it, but I have issues. I loved the beginning with the focus on friendship. The teenage angst and heartbreak storyline later on was relatable in its dramatics, but also intense in its hysterics. The perspective rests on its white male gaze and is a product of its time (can’t believe I’m saying that about the late 90s). Pacing was off especially toward the end. 3.5 🌟

Still in bed (less sick) and still reading. I don’t think this book’s writing style and lack of plot would be for everyone, but I’m still liking it. It’s definitely not a diverse story, and some comments and descriptions about bodies and culture give me pause. However, it was also written in 1996 by a white man, so perhaps I shouldn’t expect what I would deem necessary today.

Welcome to ep.2 of Reading Small Books on my TBR while Sick. I have also had this one since high school … maybe even middle school. What can I say? I loved reading about troubled teens as a goodie two shoes. We’re continuing those vibes today. Let’s see how it goes.
