"If summer was a gilded ball that had been flung up, up into the sky - high,
high - now it comes plummeting down, down. It has reached its peak, it has
hung for an incredible length of time, suspended in mid-air, but now the sun
lowers itself, quite gently, with a barely audible sigh. The woods and
meadows that had shimmered in its heat, now shiver and turn grey,
subdued. Everything is normal again."

"It was not fear she felt, or
danger. Or, rather, these were only what edged something much darker,
wilder, more thrilling, a kind of exultation - it was exactly what she had
always wanted, she realised. Then they had saved her. The saving was what
made her shudder and cry, there on the sandbar, soaking wet, while the
morning sun leapt up in the hazy, sand-coloured sky "

First five star read of September 😛secured. Anita Desai is an underrated treasure, she weaves such beauty into suffering, such wonder into survival. I will very reading everything she writes as soon as possible. What a writer. Every page of this book so far has had me transfixed.

Uma is quote possibly one of fictions most fascinating heroine's. I love how she never let's herself be truly dominated. Her family might control her life and exploit her as a servant BUT her mind still finds things to cling onto, moments of personal rebellion they can not take from her. Such a pleasure to read!!!!
