Barney Herrin Reading this rn too 🤣 what you think so far ?

Tommy Morris We only read as a pair now bro. I’m still on the fence tbh, parts I love, some digressions that drag on slightly, I’m keen to see where it goes - for me nothing beats the first section of Savage Detectives

Tommy Morris What about you?

Barney Herrin I’m into part 2 the part about amalfitano, so far I’m completely sold but yeah interesting to see how it all culminates. I actually see parallels with savage detectives seems like Bolanos favorite thing to write about is characters on quests for niche writers no one else knows anything about. Whilst part one of savage detectives is one of the most alive and exciting depiction of young adults I’ve ever read I think this is a really good depiction of middle age. Now they’re settled in saint teresa I think it’s found its place and the mystery of the disappearing women is an interesting build. Big fan so far though and glad there’s loads more left

Barney Herrin I read that Bolano intended to release each 5 parts separately but when his terminal illness ramped up he decided for them to be released posthumously as one, I think if I’d just read part 1 as a stand alone novel as part of a series I would’ve been a bit less enthusiastic in it as a whole.

Tommy Morris That’s very interesting, i was under the impression that he said in his will for it to be five books in order to better provide for his kids, but then the publishers just said fuck the kids and dropped the doorstopper

Tommy Morris Just finished p1 so excited to keep going xx
