Creature from the Black Lagoon and a giant bird. What a wild chapter.

Chapter 5
Bill Denbrough Beats the Devil (1)
This chapter yanked me around a bit at first. The switch in focus from Ben on the plane to Bill on his plane wasn't super obvious to me at first, so I backtracked. Then the switch from Eddie getting hurt outside of school to the Barrens incident was confusing, even after multiple reads. After that point though, it was a charming story of the start of a friendship.

Finished Chapter 4, where we get to follow Ben as a kid and experience life in Derry through his eyes a little. His crush on Bev, his introduction to the boys, his first glimpse of Pennywise, and of course his run-in with Henry where he gets his stomach carved. That story stuck with me all through the years, ever since I first read this book, and it's still so sad now. I could really identify with little Ben.

Part 2 - June 1958
Ben Hanscom Takes a Fall
The beats that each subsection of this chapter end with are expertly done. Even though we kinda assume we know what's coming, the way the stage is set is fun to read and really paints a vivid picture of Derry in 1958 through the eyes of Ben. The length of this book is a bit intimidating when you first look at it, but the pages fly by.

Derry: The First Interlude
The introduction to the guy who ties it all together Mr. Mike "You Have To Come Back" Hanlon.
A bit of a slow read, but super interesting and imaginative. The Easter egg hunt, in particular, is a particularly vivid image that makes me super excited for whenever Welcome to Derry is finally finished.
