In 1892 his sister and some other friends has passed. He was seen running through a field, wild-eyed; gasping and sweating. (Me talking- sounds like an appropriate way to mourn). When he’d compose piano pieces in this period, he’d often moan in what sounded like sad sounds.
The 7 Fanatasias Op 116 and 3 Intermezzos Op117 came during this time.

On his 59th birthday, there would be no more talks of quitting, but also no more large projects, no more (Clara’s words) glorious gifts to mankind. Now, he told Clara, he was composing for himself alone.

Retirement didn’t last long as he met and befriended clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld and began his love affair with the clarinet.

Friedrich Schiller (a fav poet of Brahms. He set Nanie to it in honor of the death of his friend)
Schiller is considered to be one of Germany’s most important classical playwrights.
