The darkness does not lift but becomes yet heavier as I think how little we can hold in mind, how everything is constantly lapsing into oblivion with every extinguished life, how the world is, as it were, draining itself, in that the history of countless places and objects which themselves have no power or memory is never heard, never described or passed on.

Oh, that’s such a perfect parallel, Noel, thank you for taking the time to dig it up! It really does feel like Sebald and Proust are circling the same mystery, how unnoticed shifts and hidden causes shape the course of our lives. And it’s lovely to hear this ripple of Proust just now, as I’m taking a break between The Prisoner and The Fugitive, waiting for the right moment to hop back on La Recherche’s train again haha :)
