"It was a perfect picture-book image [of the older Romanov princesses]; but it would be the girls' last ball in their beloved Crimea."
Right about halfway through.... I want to shout at the Tzar & Tarista to let Olga & Tatiana marry....get away, leave the country.... but tragedy is stalking them all relentlessly. Makes this a tough read.

The Romanov sisters, described by writer Nadezhda Mandelshtam:
I suddenly understood that I was much happier than these unfortunate [princesses]; after all, I could run around with the dogs on the street, make friends with the boys, not learn my lessons... go to bed late... and fight with my brothers and anybody else... They were polite, affectionate... they weren't even allowed to fight... poor girls.
