I just don't understand what I'm supposed to like about this? The ideas are interesting enough but the execution is so boring and detached. Am I supposed to ship the two men? If so, will I ever be presented with any evidence that they love each other? One of them just compared the other to a random dude and it sounded like the random dude was clearly winning. Am I supposed to be invested in any character at all?

Nit-picky criticism ahead: this is a book where one of the protagonists is supposed to be this genius botanist who knows everything about plants (and fungi, for some reason - I'm not getting into that). A person who is so painfully accurate as to describe his coffee as "bean juice." But coffee "beans" are actually seeds, the fruit is a berry. Pseudo-intellectual but using inaccurate terminology, real fucking annoying
