A woman grabbed my arm. "How much for the kid? They won't let me on if I don't have a kid."

The wandering boy's legs tightened on my shoulders.

"He's not for sale," I told her.

"Everyone has a price," she said.

"But clearly not everyone has a soul," said Poet, raising his walking stick to the woman. "Step away from the child."

"I've lost my family, my language, and my country. I've lost it all."

"The shoemaker turned to me, his eyes full of tears. "Do you see, my dear? The proverbs are at play. 'I wept because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet."

"The woman's tears turned to sobs. "No, she's not ill. She's sleeping."

Alfred turned to face the woman and pulled back the blanket. He sneered. "She's not sleeping. She's dead! Officer, this child is deceased." Alfred peered at the dead baby with studious fascination."

"The Polish girl stepped away from the group and stood by my side."

"The Polish girl knelt beside us. She spoke quietly, stroking the nurse's hair and wiping her tears. Then, without a word, she lifted my arms and placed them around the nurse."
