In the story, the organization, fifth harmony, created a lot of advanced technology, and an academy of child spies that needed to be hidden to the public. Due to this factor, the headquarters of this organization needed to be isolated from the human population. Manhattan Beach is not an isolated, rural place, but a populated, growing city.

The people will wonder what would be going on inside the headquarters. A hypothetical example would be, if a new factory opened in the middle of Manhattan, offering kids to work there for a 3 year scholarship, and no tours allowed of the factory. People would wonder what is going on in there, and why they are doing this.

This story cannot take place in Manhattan Beach, California. Helix takes place in a distant future where an organization called 5th harmony takes control of all people woth unique genetic traits. It is unclear about where it exactly takes place, but from the complicated machines and and contraptions, it is easy to tell that Helix cannot take place in Manhattan Beach.
