genuinely was gonna drop this book because it was too rushed… im not fond of time jumps and important events get summarized or stated in one single sentence (how this one character suddenly becomes an amazing bandit leader 🤨 from a purposeless worker, battles, etc.) BUT so many of u guys love it and apparently this is just development for a huge payoff sooo

wow those two chapters on kikomi… that’s how u write a woman without pandering to stereotypes while simultaneously being aware of them and how they can be subverted with just her thoughts to write a complex character

To me, it almost reads like a history book at times, just kind of giving you the bare facts about big events and moving right along (kind of like how Fire & Blood from the Song of Ice and Fire series reads). It's been a hot minute since I read it, but it does slow down and let you settle in with characters & events eventually

It almost makes me wonder if the author just needed to start the book in a different spot, like timeline-wise. Almost as if he needed to get through the backstory, and then once it gets to where the story really starts then he slows down and zooms in. Idk 🤷♀️ hopefully the characters draw you in eventually! I was surprised by how much I ended up caring about all of them, esp as the series goes on. Good luck!
the first book is entirely set up and definitely reads like a history textbook most of the time, but in the next books the characters are so much more developed and the plot gets super expansive and intricate! iirc this series has some of the most interesting characters i've encountered. also sorry to talk about the last book when ur only on the first but the ending is so cool and i'm alr excited to see ur thoughts on it!
