Reading partly to motivate my friend to finish the book on time.
The preliminary discussions on the stages of development was interesting but I’m not certain about the quality of Engel’s writing as an anthropologist - not my field and I’m not sure to what degree it’s his either.

While I largely concur with you, I will give credit where it is due and say that the prefaces he wrote provide some decent insight into the state of discussion around these topics at that time. Emotionally charged for sure, but if you can separate that out then it can be elucidating. Probably won’t touch too much on this in my discussion though.
