I started reading Black Orpheus as a pdf I found on the web and restarted for a physical copy of Sartre’s collected essays, “We Have Only This Life to Live.” I prefer the former. I find it more personable and human, kinder to read though perhaps less fluid. The book copy reads very colonial to me. It might be my imagination.. So gonna switch over and start again. I like this essay so I don’t really mind.

Reading this just waiting to come upon something so horrifically racist … breath is bated. I remind myself of the limitations of our author, and of any one person - but then also of our soaring observational/intellectual/imaginative capacities. This is interesting so far. Questionable, I’m definitely questioning, but I’m not rubbed the wrong way- though I have to stress, this is ten pages so far.
