Despite the gore in this book, it excels at displaying the deep and unspoken words of loneliness and grief. Muriel has asked Avalon to transform into her late husband for the second time, and she treats him as though he is really him. They are role-playing as the old married couple they once were, even going as far as sharing physical affection...and it is heartbreaking to know that is won't last forever
