the chronology printed of everything happening at the same time, a world mad and violent, is overwhelming — and it’s deeply grounding, to read people in that maelstrom; I think often of the old yellowed library check out card for Mary Borden’s memoir of her time as a nurse for the trenches, and how many many times it was stamped for check out in the late 1930s and early 1940s

it’s taken me like two hours to read the (extremely wry and well-written) introduction bc I keep putting the book down to put books it mentions on hold at the library, and now I’m at my max number of holds and it’s midnight
