Finished chapter 3. Most noteworthy passage: “The procedure is to pin the animal down, take a knife, and slit the scrotum, exposing the testicles. You then grab each testicle in turn and pull on it, breaking the cord that attaches it; on older animals it may be necessary to cut the cord.” I can’t believe they do this to animals without anesthesia

The chapter about psychologists testing animals using electric shocks has deepened my suspicion against experimental psychological testing on animals and, as a whole, dissuades me from pursuing psych research (at least on animals). A lot of suffering for literally no reason; the part about Harlow’s “rape racks” to impregnate female monkeys is insane and didnt even teach us anything new about psychology

Done chapter 1. His argument about the "sanctity of human life" being strictly defined among species lines by most people was insightful like his comparison of how a fully grown cat shows more intelligence and rationality than a severely mentally disabled baby. So it doesn't make sense to value the sanctity of life strictly based on if a living thing is a human or not, which is a view people are uncomfortable with
