We’re in familiar territory. School days. Teenage years of discovery. Dyer renders it all so remarkable. It’s an easy but rewarding read. One of his best books I guess, because the subject, for once, is himself, and the England he once knew. Not this angry ugly island we now inhabit.

Another great book from the best writer in England (although bizarrely lives across the ocean in the loony land). So maybe doesn’t qualify any longer? Nevertheless this memoir of his English childhood is brilliant and at times hilarious. Maybe he should have stayed put?
