The main reason I prefer historical or fantasy danmei to modern growing up novels is that the latter are too realistic in the drama and suffering. Too relatable. I prefer the suffering from fairytales for kidults where the worst thing that would happen to 2 gays is being gossipped about and the actual suffering comes from monsters, wars between cultivator sects and dynasties and such. To hell with homophobic dramas.
